A Note from Debra About the Class
During the course of this class we will take a look at many of the situations that arise in our practices each year.  Even though I've taught this class several years now, there is always something new I learn when I go through this material again.
We'll review income: earned, investment, retirement, etc.
Did you know there are hundreds of different credits? Many of these will be covered.
How about basis of assets? What about all the various ways to sell or exchange property, such as repossessions, involuntary conversions, installment sales, 'like kind exchanges,' and more? Do you feel totally competent in all these areas? A refresher might be good.
We'll also look at the various types of business income and expenses; Schedule C,  Schedule F, SE and 2106. And there's the ever present 'office in home' deduction.
Let's not forget those fun PAL's and NOL's. We'll address many, many other topics! This is great review and discovery for the seasoned preparer or for the LTP studying to take the LTC exam.

Debra A. McKinney, L.T.C.

Debra grew up in Sweet Home, the youngest of 4 daughters.  She worked many years as a bookkeeper for private industry, in a CPA office, as well as in a school district.  Her cousin is Peggy Dooley, formerly an Oregon Association of Tax Consultants (OATC) and State Board member.  With Peggy's encouragement, Debra became licensed while living in Medford in 1991, and later joined Peggy in her tax business in 1998.  It was through Peggy's mentoring that Debra gives the credit for her success today.

Debbie is a Licensed Tax Consultant and has taught Basic Income Tax for several years.  Two of those years her pass ratio was 100% and another year it was 80%.  (The state average is 68%).  She has also been teaching at the OATC and OSTC Chapter levels for continuing education, as well as at OSTC 2005 Convention and 2006 Spring Fling.  Several years she has taught  LTC Prep Classes.  September 2006 she taught the Back to Basics Seminars around the state, and in May 2008 she taught the Safety Net Seminars. These were sponsored by State OATC.  Her love is teaching and she is expanding into more  opportunities around the state.

She served as 2nd VP of the Mid-Willamette Chapter of OATC for four years, and was 1st VP for two years.  For 4 years she served as State Education Chair for OATC, and is currently State Membership Chair.

Debra owns her own tax preparation business in Corvallis.  She was awarded the Exemplary ERO for Oregon for 2000 by the IRS.  She has also been asked by IRS to sit on a Panel of Experts at one of their seminars.  At the OATC convention in 2007, she was honored with the Margaret Sills Award...a very special award to people who have given of themselves to the organization.

Her husband, Bill, is also an LTC, EA and works with her during tax season.  She has four grown children, with two and a half wonderful grandchildren!  She is very involved in her church, and occasionally teaches adult Sunday school classes and a Women's Bible Study.  Currently she is serving on the local advisory committee for the Teen Challenge International Ministry Institute (TCIMI).

William (Bill) McKinney, Enrolled Agent/Licensed Tax Consultant

Bill grew up in Medford, Oregon and later San Diego, California.  After serving 4 years in the United States Marine Corps, Bill attended Coleman College in San Diego, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science.  He worked for more than 13 years within the telephone industry and has over 28 years experience with computers performing a wide range of tasks, data analysis, networking, configuration, troubleshooting and Systems Administration.

Debra McKinney became Bill’s wife in 1995, and they have lived in Lebanon, Oregon for the past 13 years.  He has two grown children; a son in Colorado, and daughter who lives in Arizona with his first grandchild who arrived in the fall of 2007.

In 1998 Bill became a Licensed Tax Preparer, and in 2000 he passed Oregon’s Licensed Tax Consultant exam.  He sat for and passed his Enrolled Agents (EA) exam in the fall of 2006.  For the last ten years, Bill has worked side by side with his wife Debra in building and expanding her tax consulting and preparation business.  He has received personal recognition from the IRS, honoring his contributions through education for the Small Business/Self Employed taxpayer.  He is currently serving as President for the Mid-Willamette Chapter of OATC.

Bill enjoys teaching and has experience doing so at the local chapter level.  He has traveled within Oregon teaching at OATC and OSTC chapter meetings.  Bill will be travelling throughout Oregon during May of 2009, as one-half of the team presenting Safety Net for OATC.  He has an insatiable thirst for knowledge and typically acquires 80 to 100 hours of continuing education each year.

Continuing to work in the computer industry full time, Bill currently works for Selmet, Inc., as their Network Administrator in Albany Oregon.  He also maintains a Sole Proprietor computer support and consulting business that he began in 1998.

A goal of Bill’s is to teach nationally, providing the engaging, insightful professional education his students have enjoyed.
